Abstract
The Search for Solutions in the Space of Free Merge

Theoretical syntax aims to minimize the number of stipulative constraints required to account for linguistic data. Recent developments in the Minimalist Program framework (Chomsky 1995), particular with respect to the theory of displacement, viz. Internal Merge, have taken the approach that Merge operates freely, e.g. Chomsky 2007 and later work. By eliminating feature-driven displacement, we eliminate the need to posit Edge or EPP features. This theoretical advancement comes at a cost in terms of the combinatorics of Merge. In this talk, we address the size and extent of the problem, and describe strategies for reducing the combinatorics, motivated by Third Factor constraints. We will illustrate these issues using examples from a parallel computer implementation.
